MTT preflop ranges: reason from context
A preflop range is not a universal list of playable hands. It describes actions in one situation: format, position, effective stack and previous sequence.

Opening UTG, defending the BB against BTN and calling an 8 BB shove are three different problems. The same hand can receive three answers.
Opening ranges widen towards late position. Continuing against an early open instead requires a tighter range.
Learn them usefully
Start with broad zones: premiums, playable hands, boundaries and folds. Then practise hands close to an action change.
After a mistake, identify the forgotten variable: opener position, depth, players behind or action type.
Assumptions and limitations
The matrices provide a simplified framework. Sizes, antes, formats, profiles and ICM can move the boundaries.
FAQ
Does one range work at every depth?
No. Calls, opens, 3-bets and shoves change with effective stack depth.
