Big blind defence: fold, call or 3-bet
The big blind receives a special price because one blind is committed, but that does not mean every hand should continue. Price, equity realisation and opening range must be considered together.
Start free training →Opener position
An UTG open normally represents a stronger range than a BTN open. Weak hands therefore lose value quickly against early position.
The larger the open, the worse the BB price. Antes improve the pot without guaranteeing good equity realisation out of position.
Choose between actions
Calling keeps dominated hands in the opposing range but requires playing out of position. A 3-bet can extract value or use selected blockers.
Compare a marginal hand against UTG and then BTN: boundaries are more instructive than obvious decisions.
Assumptions and limitations
Recommendations assume defined sizes and antes. Profiles, rake, ICM and exact depths can change the action.
FAQ
Should you defend very wide against a min-raise?
The price widens defence, but opener position and equity realisation remain essential.
